Bill Oliver HorsemanshipBill Oliver Horsemanship: A Lifetime of Experience with Horses

Bill Oliver has dedicated his life to working with horses. He grew up in Eureka, California, where he developed a love for riding, packing, and hunting in the Cascade Mountains. His passion for horses only grew as he moved to Wyoming and worked for Wilderness outfitters after high school.

In 1991, Bill joined the Forestry Service as a Lead Packer. He was already skilled in packing and riding, but he wanted to learn more about horses. That’s when he came across trainers Monte Roberts and the Dorrance Brothers. Bill realized he had much to learn from them and their approach to Natural Horsemanship.

With his newfound knowledge and experience, Bill retired from the Forest Service and trained horses for the Top-Notch Horse Sale in Cody. It was then that he realized he had a unique style of Natural Horsemanship that he wanted to share with others.

Oliver Horsemanship: Sharing Knowledge and Experience

Bill and his wife Jody formed Oliver Horsemanship, a company that aims to educate and share their expertise with others. Bill’s approach to Natural Horsemanship emphasizes the horse’s physical and mental well-being. It focuses on creating a willing partnership between horse and rider through understanding and respect.

This year, Bill has a full schedule of clinics that range from basic horsemanship to roping and colt starting. These clinics provide a great opportunity for horse enthusiasts to learn from a master horseman who has spent his life working with horses.

They designed the Roping Clinic for riders who want to learn the art of roping. Participants will learn the basics of roping and how to safely and effectively use a rope. This clinic is perfect for those who want to try their hand at ranch work or rodeo events.

Colt Starting Clinic: Starting Young Horses on the Right Foot

They designed the Colt Starting Clinic for riders who want to start young horses on the right foot. Participants will learn how to properly introduce a horse to riding and how to develop a strong foundation for future training. This clinic is perfect for those who want to train their own horses or start a career in horse training.

Bill Oliver’s lifetime of experience with horses has made him a master horseman. His dedication to Natural Horsemanship and his unique style of training have led him to form Oliver Horsemanship with his wife Jody. Their company provides a great opportunity for horse enthusiasts to learn from a true expert in the field.

Ranching with Jack Varian at the V6 Ranch

April 11, 2023 by John Leave a Comment

The Legacy of Jack Varian and the V6 Ranch: A Sustainable Approach to Cattle Ranching

Jack VarianJack Varian, a fourth-generation cattle rancher, dedicated his life to preserving the land and his family’s legacy. His approach to cattle ranching focused on sustainable practices that prioritized the health of the land, animals, and people involved. The V6 Ranch, located in California, has become a model for sustainable ranching, and Varian’s legacy continues to inspire generations of ranchers. In this blog post, we will explore the legacy of Jack Varian and the V6 Ranch, their sustainable approach to cattle ranching, and the impact they have made on the industry.

Sustainable Practices at the V6 Ranch

The V6 Ranch is located in Parkfield, California. One of the key practices that Varian emphasized was rotational grazing. This practice involves moving cattle to different pastures to allow the land to rest and recover. This approach not only helps to maintain the health of the land but also improves the quality of the grasses, which in turn improves the quality of the beef produced.

Another sustainable practice that the V6 Ranch implements is the use of cover crops. Cover crops are plants grown between grazing periods to help maintain the health of the soil. These plants improve soil fertility, reduce erosion, and increase the water-holding capacity of the soil. This practice also helps to prevent the spread of invasive species and weeds.

The Impact of Sustainable Ranching

The sustainable practices implemented at the V6 Ranch have had a significant impact on the environment, the animals, and the people involved. By utilizing rotational grazing and cover crops, the ranch has been able to maintain the health of the land and improve the quality of the grasses. This, in turn, has improved the quality of the beef produced.

The Legacy of Jack Varian

Jack VarianJack Varian’s legacy is one of sustainability, conservation, and a commitment to preserving the land and his family’s legacy. His dedication to sustainable ranching has influenced generations of ranchers, and his approach has become a model for the industry.

Varian’s commitment to sustainability and conservation has left a lasting impact on the industry and the environment. His legacy continues to inspire ranchers to implement sustainable practices and to prioritize the health of the land, animals, and people involved.

It’s an exciting equestrian sport that combines horseback riding with endurance and navigation skills, and John Zeliff, the president of the North American Trail Riding Conference (NATRC), wants to introduce you to it.

As a young man, John discovered his passion for horseback riding while exploring the countryside with his horse and dog. Today, John is the president of NATRC, and he wants to invite anyone who loves horses and the outdoors to discover the thrill of competitive trail riding. In this podcast episode, John shares his experience and insights into this unique sport.

It requires both physical and mental stamina, as well as the ability to work as a team with your horse.

John explains how NATRC promotes sportsmanship, horse welfare, and education about trail riding and the environment. The organization offers clinics, seminars, and competitions for riders of all levels, from beginners to experts.

He also shares tips on how to prepare for a competitive trail ride, from training your horse to packing the right gear and supplies. He highlights the importance of building a bond of trust and communication with your horse, as well as the joy of sharing the experience with fellow riders and volunteers.

Bakersfield Youth Rodeo’s Positive Impact

February 28, 2023 by John Leave a Comment

Bakersfield Youth Rodeo’s Positive Impact

Bakersfield Youth RodeoIt’s the second Saturday morning of the month and Rancho Rio Equestrian Center is filling with kids, parents, horses, and truck and trailer rigs. For many young riders, rodeo is more than just a sport, it’s a way of life. In this podcast, we’ll explore the connection between rodeo and the local Cowboy Church, and how it’s making a positive impact on the youth of today.

My Experience with the Bakersfield Youth Rodeo

Bakersfield Youth RodeoWhen I was invited to a steer riding clinic for the Bakersfield Youth Rodeo, I was eager to see what it was all about. The energy of the young riders with their parents’ constant encouragement was everywhere. My experience at the rodeo was not only fun, but it gave me a deeper appreciation for the positive impact it has on the youth.

The Rodeo’s Connection to the Cowboy Church

One of the most striking things about the youth rodeo was the connection to the local Cowboy Church, Branded Heart Fellowship. I spoke with the Pastor of the Church Randy Gafner, who is also the president of the Bakersfield Youth Rodeo Club. He shared with me the benefits of exposing children to the sport of rodeo. He believes that rodeo not only teaches kids important life skills like teamwork and resilience, but it also helps build their faith and connects them to the community.

The Art of Colt Starting with Shawn Dunn

February 14, 2023 by John Leave a Comment

Mastering the Art of Colt Starting with Shawn Dunn

shawn dunnAs a seasoned colt starter with over three decades of experience working with horses across the country, Shawn Dunn has a unique insight into the art of colt starting. From the basics of training to the finer details of horse behavior, Shawn has seen it all and is eager to share his knowledge with others.

In this episode, we delve into the world of colt starting and learn about Shawn’s approach to horse training. We also explore the importance of starting a horse off on the right foot and the long-term impact it can have on the horse’s life.

The Art of Colt Starting

Colt starting is often considered an art form, requiring a special set of skills and a deep understanding of horse behavior. It is the process of taking a young horse and teaching it the basics of life under saddle.

According to Shawn, the key to successful colt starting is understanding that each horse is unique and requires a tailored approach. He believes that the earlier you start training a horse, the better off they will be in the long run.

“The best dog I ever had was the one I began training at 7 weeks old,” says Shawn. “The start kids get in pre-school is so important to how they will grow up. So, why should it be any different with horses?”

Training Techniques

Shawn’s approach to colt starting centers around building a strong foundation of trust and respect between horse and handler. He believes that creating a safe and secure environment for the horse is crucial for their growth and development.

One of Shawn’s favorite training techniques is the use of groundwork, which he describes as “teaching the horse to understand the language of the handler.” This can include simple exercises like leading, lunging, and ground driving.

By working with the horse on the ground, Shawn can establish a clear communication line and build trust with the horse before getting on its back. He believes that this approach results in a smoother and more positive riding experience for both horse and rider.
