Spring Creek Basin Mustangs ~ TJ Holmes

September 5, 2017 by John Leave a Comment

Spring Creek Basin Mustangs with TJ Holmes

Spring Creek Basin Mustangs

Cinch leads Corazon and Twister along a bench east of the county road in Spring Creek Basin on Oct. 20, 2007.

TJ Holmes has been visiting the Spring Creek Basin Mustangs since 2002.  In 2007, she began documenting the herd.  She is essentially the herd’s historian.  She keeps track of births, deaths, band structure and so much more.  If something happens in the Spring Creek Basin Mustang herd, TJ Holmes has probably documented it.

Working as a volunteer for the BLM, TJ Holmes acts as an advocate for the Spring Creek Basin Mustangs.  Because she knows the horses so well and on an individual basis, she is an integral part of the herd management.  TJ implements the herd’s PZP program on the Spring Creek Basin Mustangs.  PZP is a birth control protocol that has kept the Mustang levels at a manageable level. Much of the PZP methods used on Mustangs was taught to TJ by her mentor, Jay Kirkpatrick of the Science and Conservation Center.

Best Horse Practices Summit

Horse SummitRanae and I are headed to Durango in October for the Best Horse Practices Summit.  This intimate horse expo brings together experts from all aspects of horse behavior and is sure to add to our horse knowledge.  The BHP Summit is limiting attendance to 200 people ensuring everyone gets the focus and attention they need.  We are looking to take away valuable horsemanship tools from the Summit and hope to meet you there.  You can register here.

What’s Next? – Looks Like Horse Training

August 14, 2016 by John Leave a Comment

horse trainingWell, honestly, I don’t know.  Trying to create a podcast – get the guest, interview the guest, edit the podcast, post to the website – as a one-man show, is a challenge.  It’s not impossible.  It’s just that I have lots of other things I can do, mainly ride my own horses.

I have people asking me to help them with their horses.  While I’ve never thought of myself as a trainer, I’ve come to realize I have a good amount of knowledge, a lot of it gleaned from doing the podcast,  that will help many novice horse owners.  They are willing to pay for it.  The podcast has not generated any income.

Oh, don’t give me that.  It’s not all about the money.  But, I’ve got to buy gas and tires for my truck.  I’ve got to buy feed for my horses.  There is a certain amount of satisfaction that comes from getting paid for the work you do.  I realize I’m not the most charismatic podcast host and that is likely the reason it’s not been profitable.  I’m semi-okay with that.  I’ll keep working on my storytelling skills and I’m hopeful they will improve.

Meanwhile, I am paying to keep all the podcasts episodes available.  You can still get them from iTunes and Stitcher.

And, if you have any suggestions, I’ll listen.

For the next few months, I’ll work on building a clientele and see how this horse training endeavor goes.  If you need a good coach for your groundwork, or you have a problem with trailer loading, I’m your guy.  Drop me a line.

The New Whoa Podcast about Horses and Horsemanship

January 1, 2013 by John Leave a Comment

The Whoa PodcastWhoa Podcast

We start the new year with our new name The Whoa Podcast About Horses and Horsemanship. Initially we called our show the DUH podcast.  We changed our name to the Whoa Podcast for a couple of reasons, most notably because many folks thought we were affiliated with Downunder Horsemanship. We are not. We just learned most of what we know from using the Method and wanted an avenue to share that knowledge with others.

Now we want to spread our wings a bit and explore other aspects of horses and horsemanship and perhaps build a brand ourselves.  Now, we hope to explore other aspects of the horse world.  We’ll talk about training, of course, but from a number of differing philosophies.  We also hope to talk about horse-keeping and care. And, we want to add a little culture by talking about movies, music and books.

We think you will like the new show. Ranae and I are just like you dealing with the challenges of horse ownership while juggling work, family, and other life commitments. Join the Whoa Podcast and “stop by” our show as we learn together.

We hope you find and like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.
