Horse Health Dr. John Tolley

April 7, 2015 by John 3 Comments

What do you know about Horse Health?

Horse Health with Dr. TolleyHow do maintain horse health?  As a new horse owner, what costs are associated with horse health?  Owning a horse is a great experience.  Unfortunately, horses aren’t maintenance free.  We wanted to answer these questions and more so we reached out to our reliable source of information and local expert on horse health, our veterinarian Dr. John Tolley.  Dr. Tolley is a partner at Bakersfield large Animal Veterinary Hospital.  With more than 20+ years of experience, he knows horses.  On this show, you learn about horse feed requirements and supplementation.  Plus, we tell you what vaccinations and worming products you need.  Dr. Tolley talks about the importance of equine dentistry, too.  Everything concerning horse health is covered in this general conversation.

Dr. Tolley says he will come back and share more thoughts on horse health.  If you have a topic you would like to see us cover, please shoot me an email.

Help For New Horse Owners

Help For New Horse Owners

New Horse Owners Book

There’s something about the relationship we have with horses.  They are irresistible.  Many of us get a horse – almost as a pet – then realize how little knowledge we possess about the animal.  New horse owners have had to struggle to get the information they need.  Well, now there’s help.  Today, we have an old friend on the show. Linda Gordon was on the Whoa Podcast in our very first season way back in March 2012. She is a professional photographer and the Downunder Horsemanship Tour Photographer. Linda travels with the crew to all of the Clinton Anderson Walkabout Tours. On that show Linda talked about photography and she really helped me with tips to improve my photography especially when it comes to horses. Now, Linda along with a couple of friends – Joan Fischer and Karin Roberts, have written a book, You Bought Your First Horse, Now What? While the book has some great practical information for new horse owners, the three authors have another goal, to have fun with with their horses.

new horse ownersAnd, while new horse owners sometimes find themselves a bit stressed, these three authors are able to dress up valuable information in a way that will bring a smile to your face.  I hope you’ll check out So You Bought Your First Horse, Now What? on Amazon or Tate Publishing.com.

You can find out more about our show at WhoaPodcast.com. Every episode is listed here along with links to our youtube channel with over 70 videos, my training Jessie blog, and my newly pressed blog about my Lousiana Leopard Catahoula pup, Buster Brown Dog, and more.

About Us

Welcome to the Whoa Podcast about Horses and Horsemanship.   I am your host  John Harrer.  Along with my wife, Ranae, each week on the show we talk about some aspect of owning a horse.  It could be feeding or supplementation.  It could be bits and bridles, tack, or cowboy boots.  We cover training problems, or competing in shows.  We talk to farriers and horse chiropractors.  And we travel to places we think you would like to take your horse.   That’s what the Whoa Podcast is all about.

Porta-Grazer with Walt Tharp

March 4, 2014 by John Leave a Comment

Porta-Grazer with Walt Tharp

Porta-GrazerEpisode #017.

When I received an email on the No Worries Club forums from listener Rebekah about a device that was helping her horse in a number of different ways, I was a bit skeptical.  After all, there are a lot of gimmicks out there.  But she is  a fan, and the show is about learning, so I investigated.  The product is the Porta-Grazer, a slow release feeder with a unique design.  My first visit was to the Porta-Grazer website.  It was very informative.  As with any animal, including humans, it’s not only what we eat, but when and how much.  There’s a lot of great information here and I would encourage you to look into it if your horse has any metabolic health problems.

Porta-GrazerMy next step was to contact Porta-Grazer’s owner, Walt Tharp.  Walt developed the Porta-Grazer while trying to find a way to help horses with founder who were getting too many sugar calories too quickly.  Walt talks about how he researched the problem.  Once he felt he handle on the problem, he had to come up with a solution that was durable, effective, and accounted for the individual personality each horse.  Walt’s Porta-Grazer has a number of great features.  One is a little trough for capturing the dust and sand that might be in the feed.  Another feature is the locking feed system so the horse can not get to all the feed at once.  But, I don’t want to give it all away.  Have a listen and hear Walt tell you about all the great features of the Porta-Grazer.

Walt has a few videos on the Porta-Grazer too.  You can check those out here:  Porta-Grazer video.  Find Porta-Grazer on Facebook at Facebook/Porta-Grazer.  Or contact them at 209-745-5671.

As always, we are very interested to hear what you have to say about this episode.  You can email us at: john@whoapodcast.com And, if you have any comments or suggestions for future shows, please pass them along.

Horse Cleaning and Jessie

December 10, 2013 by John Leave a Comment

A Little Horse Cleaning

We wanted to shoot some video for our Testing the Intermediate Exercises and it required a little horse cleaning.   Appearance is everything after all, and we needed her to look beautiful to distract the viewer from how poorly we executed the exercises (wink-wink) .  Fall in California is chilly, but not terribly cold.  Most of the time a good brushing is enough.  For this adventure I bathed her early in the day.  She was drying fast enough.  My cameraman (translate wife) was worried we would run out of light on these short winter days.   There was only one thing to do:  pull out the hair dryer.  Jessie seemed to rather like it.   You’ll see in this short little horse cleaning video (it’s only 33 seconds long).  Jessie is not tied to anything.  There are no strings, ropes or mirrors.  There are no tricks up my sleeve.  However, those are mulberry leaves she is standing on.  They are as sweet as candy to her. Knowing that she was just ground tied, I was surprised when she did not go after them.  Needless to say we got her dried off enough to shoot the video.  We did have to rush and we shot until all the light was gone.  But, we made it and she looks really good in the video.  Check it out!
