Help For New Horse Owners

Help For New Horse Owners

New Horse Owners Book

There’s something about the relationship we have with horses.  They are irresistible.  Many of us get a horse – almost as a pet – then realize how little knowledge we possess about the animal.  New horse owners have had to struggle to get the information they need.  Well, now there’s help.  Today, we have an old friend on the show. Linda Gordon was on the Whoa Podcast in our very first season way back in March 2012. She is a professional photographer and the Downunder Horsemanship Tour Photographer. Linda travels with the crew to all of the Clinton Anderson Walkabout Tours. On that show Linda talked about photography and she really helped me with tips to improve my photography especially when it comes to horses. Now, Linda along with a couple of friends – Joan Fischer and Karin Roberts, have written a book, You Bought Your First Horse, Now What? While the book has some great practical information for new horse owners, the three authors have another goal, to have fun with with their horses.

Horse Rescue Bakersfield Hooves Paws

July 8, 2014 by John 2 Comments

Horse Rescue Bakersfield Hooves-Paws.Org

Episode #033

Our show is dedicated to a Horse Rescue in Bakersfield.  I have always admired people who actively seek out horses or other animals in need, then help them out.  While there are probably hundreds of these organizations across the country, there is always a need for more.  On todays show we take a look at a local organization here in Bakersfield helping horses.  Affectionately known as Whiskers Paws Hooves and Claws, the group’s website is hooves-paws.org and is a 501c3 non-profit.  Hooves and Paws helps in a number of ways – Whether it’s rescuing horses from an abusive relationship or educating new owners of the basics of horse husbandry.  They started out as just a group of people who saw a need.  They knew they could make a difference.  As an organization, the group soon realized they needed to have a concise and focused mission statement to guide them.  Their mission statement is simple, yet effective:

They want to:

  • Supply financial support to foster homes and assist in horse rescue efforts and rehabilitation.
  • Help with the medical financial burdens of animals suffering from abuse.
  • Support local adoptions by donating funds to lower adoption fees, thus reducing the load placed on animal shelters.
  • Promote a  volunteer program that helps people who have struggled with abuse, medical issues, and other personal hardship’s. Their volunteers learn marketing, animal care, particularly horse-keeping,  and public relations through fundraising programs.

Funded through donations, sponsorship, grants, and fundraisers Whiskers, Paws, Hooves, and Claws is making a difference as a horse rescue Bakersfield.

We caught up with the group’s director, Julie Sugg at a local stable where she boards and cares for  the horses that are part of the organization.

No matter where you live there is a group of people working hard to improve the welfare of horses.  They can use your help.  Look them up.  Help them if you can.  Maybe it’s money.  Maybe it’s a few hours with helping with the horses (is that work? I don’t think so).  Maybe it’s donating an old bit, bridle or saddle for a fundraiser.  Any way you can help would be appreciated.  If you would like to help Whiskers, Paws, Hooves, and Claws head on over to hooves-paw.org and find out how you can lend a hand.  Or, better yet, like them on Facebook at Whiskers, Paws, Hooves, and Claws

Horse’s Immune System and Digestion with Dr. Smith

Horse’s Immune System and Digestion with Dr. Smith

Are you looking for natural ways to improve your horse’s immune system?  We are re-broadcasting our first show with Dr. Russell Smith about the benefits of Karbo Comb +.  Dr. Smith has been a veterinarian for over forty years.  He has worked with all sorts of livestock.  Based on the work he has done and his experience in the dairy industry, Dr. Smith created Karbo Combo +.  Karbo Combo + is combination of pre-biotics and probiotics.  These friendly organisms help your horse’s immune system by creating a friendly environment in the digestive tract.  They also prevent the bad guys from getting a foothold.

I find it fascinating just listening to Dr. Smith explain the properties of his product.  In particular the ionophore properties and how they help your horse’s immune system function at a much higher level.  More importantly, how ionophores can help reduce our dependence on antibiotics which many pathogens are becoming resistant to.  Dr. Smith also explains why using a supplement like his can reduce worming applications.  Have a horse with EPM?  Many people have gotten excellent results with Karbo Combo+.

horse's immuneThanks to Courtney over at TheXtraScoop.com for setting this interview up back in 2012.  Dr. Smith has a wealth of knowledge and I am happy to have had the pleasure of speaking with him.  You can also find out more about all the products Gomers makes at Gomersinc.om

Ride into the Sunset

Later in the show I’ll give you my commentary on loping your horse and riding like you are twelve.  Sometimes you just gotta do it.

Horsemen’s Re-Union Video

April 23, 2014 by John Leave a Comment

Horsemen’s Re-Union Video

Horsemen's Reunion videoThe Horsemen’s Re-union video brings 20 prominent horsemen and women together to train forty 2 and 3 year old colts. We were fortunate to get get to spend some time in Paso Robles last week for the Horsemen’s Re-union. Many of the horses belong to or are bred from the sires of Madonna Inn Quarter Horses. Rowly and Cathie Twissleman began the event three years ago to not only bring the horsemen together, but to show the public and potential buyers how the colts are started.  There is always a lot going on and I was able to piece some footage together and come up with a Horsemen’s Re-Union video.

While we didn’t get to spend the entire week there, we did get to hang around for three of the six days. I especially enjoyed the first two days. There was a lot of action as the colts put the Horsemen to the test.

There were a lot of impressive demonstrations, some wonderful vendors, great food and music.

Porta-Grazer with Walt Tharp

March 4, 2014 by John Leave a Comment

Porta-Grazer with Walt Tharp

Porta-GrazerEpisode #017.

When I received an email on the No Worries Club forums from listener Rebekah about a device that was helping her horse in a number of different ways, I was a bit skeptical.  After all, there are a lot of gimmicks out there.  But she is  a fan, and the show is about learning, so I investigated.  The product is the Porta-Grazer, a slow release feeder with a unique design.  My first visit was to the Porta-Grazer website.  It was very informative.  As with any animal, including humans, it’s not only what we eat, but when and how much.  There’s a lot of great information here and I would encourage you to look into it if your horse has any metabolic health problems.

Porta-GrazerMy next step was to contact Porta-Grazer’s owner, Walt Tharp.  Walt developed the Porta-Grazer while trying to find a way to help horses with founder who were getting too many sugar calories too quickly.  Walt talks about how he researched the problem.  Once he felt he handle on the problem, he had to come up with a solution that was durable, effective, and accounted for the individual personality each horse.  Walt’s Porta-Grazer has a number of great features.  One is a little trough for capturing the dust and sand that might be in the feed.  Another feature is the locking feed system so the horse can not get to all the feed at once.  But, I don’t want to give it all away.  Have a listen and hear Walt tell you about all the great features of the Porta-Grazer.

Walt has a few videos on the Porta-Grazer too.  You can check those out here:  Porta-Grazer video.  Find Porta-Grazer on Facebook at Facebook/Porta-Grazer.  Or contact them at 209-745-5671.

As always, we are very interested to hear what you have to say about this episode.  You can email us at: john@whoapodcast.com And, if you have any comments or suggestions for future shows, please pass them along.
