Brandi Lyons Horses Horsemanship Life

February 14, 2017 by John 1 Comment

Brandi Lyons Horses and Horsemanship

Brandi LyonsYou could say Brandi Lyons has been learning about horsemanship all her life. My wife had told be about John Lyons and what he could do with a horse nearly twenty years ago. I was unimpressed simply because I wasn’t into horses. When I began working with horses, I quickly found out that anyone who could get something consistent from a horse was impressive. When a listener, Leo Van Sistine, recommended I interview Brandi Lyons, I jumped at the chance.

Maria Liverett, organizer for Brandi Lyons

Maria Liverett

It all happened quickly because Brandi is one of several clinicians hosting a weekend of horsemanship. Now, a little note.  Even though this event was scheduled just 14 days from my interview with Brandi Lyons, there has been so much rain in California that the event had to be moved.  Maria Liverett has been busy helping to organize this event. Please visit this Facebook Event Site for the latest details.

Brandi Lyons knows how fear can limit your horsemanship goals. That’s one reason why she calls her website Lyons No Limits.  Brandi works in all disciplines. In this conversation, we talk about problems the average riders face and what they can do to improve their relationship with their horse.

We also get to hear from Brandi what it was like growing up with an icon of the natural horsemanship movement.

Horse Adventure with Extreme Cowboy Race

February 3, 2017 by John 1 Comment

Horse Adventure with Extreme Cowboy Race

We are off on another horse adventure.  Yes, Ranae and I are giving the Extreme Cowboy Race a shot.  I’m riding Scratch and Ranae is using my mare, Jessie.  We’re giving Ranae’s horse, Dusty a break from this horse adventure.  He’s getting up there in years and arthritis seems to have befriended him.

Anyway, we enjoyed the Trail Trial we did last year.  Both of us like negotiating obstacles.  The time and speed of this event certainly make it more challenging.  Every race starts with a free ride.  That means you come into the arena and do a hot lap once around before you hit your first obstacle.  Personally, not my part of the competition.  I’m not crazy about teaching my horse that every time we enter an arena, he gets to take off at a gallop.  I have a picture of barrel horses in my head.  I’ll be keeping an eye on my horse to see if it’s turning him into a crackhead.

But, hey, it’s a horse adventure.  There are bound to be some challenges or it would not be an adventure, right?

The venue is great.  Shades of  Gold Ranch is set in the Leona Valley of Southern California.  It gets a bit windy, but the venue has a wonderful arena, a round pen, and nice little warm-up area.  There are also some trails nearby.  We are going up tomorrow for a clinic with Bill Cameron and we may check those trails out.

But Wait, There’s More

Check out the video.  If you like that, there’s an audio podcast about Extreme Cowboy Racing HERE.  Do me a favor by signing up for our email newsletter at the top of the page.  And, please take a moment and give a rating to the Whoa Podcast on iTunes, Sticher, and/or Google Play.  Thanks

Thanks for all your support.  It’s how we get to have another great horse adventure!

Working Cows with Scratch on the Bar SZ

January 18, 2017 by John 1 Comment

Working Cows with Scratch on the Bar SZ

Working cows in open country is so much fun.  The Bar SZ Ranch was once the home of the famed Working cows Sire, Doc Bar.  It is now an event ranch where people go for family reunions, weddings, and corporate retreats.  We traveled there to spend a weekend with our horse friends and ride the ranch.

This was one of the more fun videos I’ve produced.  After telling Bar SZ Ranch manager, Tim Borland, I wanted to see how Scratch did working cows, he rounded up his Kabota and we took off.  With my wife, Ranae, sitting in the co-pilot seat we first went to the south side of the ranch.  Scratch did well having the little tractor driving right along side of him.  And, Ranae did a wonderful job of getting footage and she was bounced around by the open trails.

We found a small group that needed to be moved and circled wide.  “Jerry” the bull was lounging in the spring sun.  He was a bit reluctant to move, but Scratch did well.  He is a confident horse and is not afraid of much once he is given the chance to assess the situation.  Going over open country with the squirrel holes, uneven footing, and fallen branches can put stress on some horses.  Not Scratch.

We go all the cows up and moving and then it is just a matter of not rushing them.  A calf tried to duck away and we had to go back for it.  Sometimes you have to dip and dodge through bushes and brambles, but most of the time working cows is all about just keeping them moving forward.

There were a couple of streams to cross.  When a horse is focused on a job he rarely worries about things like water crossings.

I think Scratch rather liked the whole experience of working cows.

Lindsay McKenna Wind River Valley Author

January 17, 2017 by John Leave a Comment

Lindsay McKenna

Lindsay McKennaLindsay McKenna has led a full life, and it’s still going strong.  She broke a wild horse at age 12, took flying lessons at 17, and joined the Navy in 1964. And, those are only a few of her accomplishments.  Because of her military service, Lindsay McKenna is sensitive to military experiences.  She writes what she knows, and she knows about veterans and PTSD.  She has written so many novels dealing with military and mercenary subjects, she earned the nickname “Top Gun of Women’s Military Fiction.”

Because of her military service, Lindsay McKenna is sensitive to military experiences.  She writes what she knows, and she knows about veterans and PTSD.  She has written so many novels dealing with military and mercenary subjects, she earned the nickname “Top Gun of Women’s Military Fiction.”

But Lindsay McKenna knows about horses too.  Her new books, the Wind River Valley series, deal with horses and ranching life.  Because Lindsay has been around horses all her life, has even owned her own ranch where she bred and raised Arabians, I wanted to have her on the show.

Behind the Scenes

Lindsay is a wonderful storyteller.  A funny thing about the interview.  I have recorded over 100 different shows now and, as many of you know there has been an occasional glitch.  Most have been minor problems with volume or a poor phone line.  This podcast took two tries.  Lindsay McKenna tells the story of being struck by lightning when she was nine.  It’s an amazing tale.  After our first conversation, when I went to edit the audio, as soon as gets to the part in the tale where the lightning strike takes place, there’s nothing but static.

Two days later I request another interview.  Lindsay graciously agrees.  We have another great conversation.  Near the end, I ask her to once again relate the lightning bolt story.  No more than thirty seconds in, the line goes dead.  We reconnect several times with the same result.  You’ll hear part of what happens on the podcast.

Military Adventure Romance

Now, I must admit, I’m not a romance novel reader.  Lindsay McKenna created a whole new genre called Military Adventure Romance.  Most of you know I listen to quite a few books on Audible.  She has several there (Lindsay McKenna has written over 175 books and sold over 23 MILLION copies worldwide!).  Almost all the ratings were 4 and 5 stars. Her new book is Wind River Rancher.  We talk about the inspiration and reason behind the story.  She sent me a copy and I’m looking forward to reading it.

Legacy of Legends Ray Hunt – Tom Dorrance

January 3, 2017 by John Leave a Comment

Legacy of Legends

Carolyn Hunt & Buck Brannaman

Carolyn Hunt & Buck Brannaman

The Legacy of Legends, a tribute to the horsemanship principles of Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance is happening March 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2017 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth.  The Legacy of Legends was co-founded by Ray’s wife Carolyn and Buck Brannaman.

According to an article in Western Horseman, Ray Hunt knew a lot about horses and was a pretty good cowhand by the time he was 30 years old.  As a consequence, he started colts, shod horses, and day-worked ranches in the Hollister, CA area.  But then a horse entered his life that opened his eyes to a new way of thinking.

The horse, a 4-year-old gelding named Hondo, had a bucking problem.  Ray was quoted in the magazine article with his dry sense of humor, “I wanted to show him in a hackamore class,” he said, “but about the time I turned a cow down the fence, I’d come back in the saddle bronc event, and you can’t show a horse in two events at the same time.  All I knew to fix the problem was what the cowboys said – just get a bigger club.”

Ray Hunt Meets Tom Dorrance

One of Ray’s friends was Bill Dorrance.  Bill introduced Ray to his brother Tom.  Tom showed Ray a few things that helped that horse stop bucking. Many of the concepts Tom used on the big gelding were new to Ray.  A year later, Ray rode Hondo to a first place in the 1961 working cowhorse hackamore class at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.

Ray learned as much as he could from Tom over the next few years and in 1971 began holding horsemanship clinics using a mix of the principles he knew and the ones he learned from Tom Dorrance.  The pair changed the face horsemanship forever.

Although Tom died in 1999 and Ray passed in 2009 there are many who are working to keep their horsemanship principles alive.  On today’s show, I speak with Ray Hunt’s grandson, Jaton Lord. Jaton is one of the participants of the Legacy to Legends event in Fort Worth in March of 2017.  Traveling with his grandparents, Jaton spent summers going to clinics and seeing Ray’s horsemanship skills first-hand.

Editor’s Note 11/26/2018:

I received the following email from Rice Horses and I thought it important to add it here.  -John

I believe the name of Ray Hunts horse was Hondo. If sound like you said, Honda. If I’m mistaken you said Honda  I apologize.

Tom Dorrance died in 2003, not 1999.

Sorry but I think that’s important to be correct.

Breakaway From Cancer

Breakaway From Cancer Today we are doing something a little different. Often, I get requests from someone to be on the show. They have a good book, a new piece of tack, or a good cause. There's not enough content for an entire show, but it's worthwhile information I think you's like to know. Since I'm producing a long version every other week, I thought I'd experiment with a short podcast in between. Let me know what you think. Beth … [Read More...]
