Gaining Respect and Control On The Ground – Series I

Jessie and I work through the first eight exercises in Clinton Anderson’s Downunder Horsemanship Gaining Respect and Control on the Ground, Series I, DVD. This is the video that started it all back in 2007. I wanted to know if a regular guy like me, who had a limited knowledge of horses (and no knowledge of horse behavior) could utilize a learn-by-watching-dvd system to train a horse without killing himself. It turns out it can be done. We followed the methods described on the videos as closely as we could and Jessie became a solid, respectful, and safe trail horse. The Clinton Anderson Method is laid out simply in these dvd’s. We simply started at the beginning of Gaining Respect and Control on the Ground with exercise 1. Once we felt we had accomplished that we moved on to number 2. Before long I had a trusting quiet horse and learned a great deal in the process.

Working at liberty is always a fun challenge. Jessie has improved a lot over the last few months. Looking back I didn’t really do a very good job of starting her off at liberty very well and had to come back and work really hard to have her “hook up” with me. We still have a long way to go. Compare to the first one seven months ago.

Gaining Respect and Control On The Ground – Series II

Jessie and I have completed the second of Clinton Anderson’s Downunder Horsemanship groundwork series, Gaining Respect and Control on the Ground. Neither one of us does all the exercises perfectly. We work on them at every opportunity and groundwork is a great way to gain your horse’s respect. The Gaining Respect and Control on the Ground dvd’s are laid out very simply and easy to follow. I had virtually no horse training experience – as you might be able to tell – and still was able to teach my horse quite a bit.

Also, we are finding that videotaping your work is a great way to improve our horsemanship skills. We had almost 40 minutes of video we condensed down to 10 minutes, so some of the exercises go by quickly and are only shown on one side. Keep on working with your horse – It will pay off.

Riding With Confidence, Series I, Part One

While we’ve been riding for quite awhile we finally got a chance to take some video of us going through each and every exercise in the Riding with Confidence series. Matt Sheridan Ranch/Trail Riding Workshop June 2009

Ever wonder what it’s like to go to a 3-day horsemanship workshop? Well, here is our experience with Matt Sheridan’s Workshop 1 – Ranch/Trail Riding held at Matt’s Ranch in Tehachapi, CA. Tehachapi is know for it’s wind and we had a lot of it. We learned alot about horses and horsemanship in those three days and had a wonderful time. We even got a ride in the beautiful Tehachapi mountains. The sound quality is poor in some areas, but I think you can get the feel of what a fun, learning experience this was. Matt Sheridan is a knowledgeable trainer, has worked as a cowboy and been around horses all his life. He is probably best known perhaps for his work at the Mustang Makeover.
