Matt Sheridan Horsemanship

This week it is the second part of our visit with Matt Sheridan.  In this segment Matt tells us the story of the Extreme Mustang Makeover and his experiences with Luna, the BLM American Mustang.  Matt explains how he with worked Luna for 92 days and got her prepared for the competition.  Matt takes us step-by-step how he work with his little mustang.  Matt gained the trust and confidence of Luna.  He knew he would have to get the horse used to the crowds, the noise, and the strangeness of civilization.  Matt talked about how he prepared for the competition.  He knew he would have to prepare for both the riding segment and the groundwork segments.  Matt explains how he broke down the training into different parts.   matt sheridan horsemanship

Then, Matt tells the story of the actual competition at Cal Expo.  Matt talks about ow much of a challenge the competition turned out to be.  There were several days of the competition.  Matt had conditioned Luna using King Feeds.  The next part was the trail competition.  Only ten horses out of thirty were going to make it to the finals.

Here’s Matt’s ride on Luna at the Western States Expo : http://youtu.be/qqwW1owM9Oc

And his James Bond routine at the Mustang Smackdown: http://youtu.be/p53VoGc89Ik

Matt goes on to tell us a little about his family and how the are following in Dad’s footsteps.

Matt is a featured rider in the upcoming Project Cowboy show airing over three weeks on RFD-TV beginning on February 14. ( Links for RFD-TV  and Project Cowboy ).  Matt tells us about the event and the different challenges he had to face.

And ever the teacher, Matt offers us 3 keys to improving your horsemanship.  Matt’s insights into working with both people and horses is what makes Matt Sheridan Horsemanship such a successful training stable.

Matt Sheridan, Horseman, Clinician, Trainer

February 5, 2013 by John 1 Comment

Quite a few horsemen and trainers have stories to tell. Not many of them tell those stories as eloquently and with purpose as Matt Sheridan. Matt is a 5th generation horseman, a successful showman in almost every discipline, and an effective clinician. Oh, and just a darn nice guy.

Matt stopped by our downtown studios about an hour away from his ranch, Matt Sheridan Performance Horses. In part one of this interview we talk about Matt’s early history training horses and breaking colts. Matt gives us a little insight into how he developed his philosopy about training horses and how much he was influenced by a chance meeting with legendary horseman, Ray Hunt. He also gives us a bit of free advice in working with our horses and expanding our knowledge.

Matt is part of the Project Cowboy show airing later this month on RFD-TV. In part two of this interview next week, we’ll break down the competition of Project Cowboy show and offer some behind the scenes insight that will give you some extra perspective of the competition.

Enjoy!

Pre-Ride Checklist For Our Trail Ride

January 22, 2013 by John Leave a Comment

Pre-Ride Check Listpre-ride checklist

Do you have a routine or pre-ride checklist before you get on your horse? C’mon, you don’t just walk out there and toss the saddle on, cinch up and go do you? Of course, you don’t.  For safety reasons it’s best to gauge the mood of your horse for the day.  On today’s show we tell you about the pre-ride checklist we follow and how it works for us! Like any creature there are going to be days when your horse feel better than others. You need to know where there head is at. It can give you a great insight to the type of ride you are going to have. It can also give you a heads up as to how much extra work you may have to do on the ride.

pre-ride checklistHere are some of the things we think are essential on every ride:

  • Cell Phone
  • Pepper Spray
  • Ricola mints
  • Pocket knife
  • Nail file
  • Hoof pick
  • Bandana

Then, John had the opportunity to work a “gather” just north of town.  It was our first experience with cows in an open area.  We had to work with other horses and climb some foothills to look for stray cattle.  It was a bit difficult for Jessie.  She was rather excited for the most part.  She wanted to be the first up every grade.  When I asked one of the hands how it might be best to handle that excitement, I got the “She’ll figure out how to conserve her energy”.  She really never did.  Maybe it’s one of those things you have to do over and over again.

The Horsemen’s Re-Union

A gathering of the best at the Horsemen’s Re-union.

What if there were a colt starting competition that wasn’t really a competition? What if there were 20 of the best horsemen/women from around the world who got together to start colts just like they would if they were on their own ranch? What if YOU could watch close up and personal?  This is The Horsemen’s Re-Union.

Horsemen's Re-unionOn this week’s show we speak with Martin Black, one of the producers of The Horsemen’s Re-Union where these “What if’s” turn into reality.  Martin tells us about this unique competition going on April 15th-20th on the Central Coast of California at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles.  You can see some of your favorite horsemen and clinicians start two colts each over a five day period.  You get to see how colt starting was meant to be.

Included in the event are a concert and dinner loaded with lots of entertainment.

The are a wide variety of ticket packages available.  For tickets and more information check out the Horsemen’s Reunion website and you can find them on Facebook to get updates on the schedule.

The New Whoa Podcast about Horses and Horsemanship

January 1, 2013 by John Leave a Comment

The Whoa PodcastWhoa Podcast

We start the new year with our new name The Whoa Podcast About Horses and Horsemanship. Initially we called our show the DUH podcast.  We changed our name to the Whoa Podcast for a couple of reasons, most notably because many folks thought we were affiliated with Downunder Horsemanship. We are not. We just learned most of what we know from using the Method and wanted an avenue to share that knowledge with others.

Now we want to spread our wings a bit and explore other aspects of horses and horsemanship and perhaps build a brand ourselves.  Now, we hope to explore other aspects of the horse world.  We’ll talk about training, of course, but from a number of differing philosophies.  We also hope to talk about horse-keeping and care. And, we want to add a little culture by talking about movies, music and books.

We think you will like the new show. Ranae and I are just like you dealing with the challenges of horse ownership while juggling work, family, and other life commitments. Join the Whoa Podcast and “stop by” our show as we learn together.

We hope you find and like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.
